How I Passed the GCP Associate Cloud Engineer Exam: Tips and Resources

Recently, I achieved a major milestone in my cloud journey — I passed the Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer (GCP ACE) exam!

For those who aren’t familiar, this certification validates your ability to deploy, monitor, and manage projects on Google Cloud Platform. Whether it’s configuring cloud environments, managing storage, or setting up IAM policies, the ACE exam covers a wide range of practical GCP skills.

In this post, I want to share my preparation strategy, the resources I used, challenges I faced, and a few tips that might help you if you’re planning to take the exam. I hope this blog will make your preparation smoother and more focused.

Motivation Behind Pursuing the Certification

With the rapid adoption of cloud technologies, I recognized the importance of formalizing my skills. The GCP Associate Cloud Engineer certification stood out as a comprehensive way to validate my expertise and stay competitive in the industry.

My journey with Google Cloud actually began during my college days. My college was part of the Google Cloud Facilitator Program, which gave students an incredible opportunity to get hands-on experience with GCP at no cost. Through this program, we were encouraged to complete Qwiklabs labs, collect points, and reach milestones. I still remember the excitement of completing all the milestones and receiving GCP swags — bags, water bottles, pens, and t-shirts — as rewards for our efforts. That experience not only introduced me to cloud computing but also sparked my curiosity to explore GCP further.

Since then, I’ve continued using GCP in many of my personal and professional projects, including building and publishing my own app on the Google Play Store. Pursuing the ACE certification felt like the natural next step to formally validate the skills I had built over the years and push myself to understand GCP more deeply.

Preparation Strategy

To prepare for the Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE) certification, I adopted a structured approach, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice.

Comprehensive Course on Udemy

I began my preparation with the GCP Associate Cloud Engineer - Google Cloud Certification course on Udemy. This course offers:

  • 25 sections and over 250 lectures, providing a deep dive into GCP services and best practices.
  • 16+ hours of content, designed for beginners to Google Cloud, ensuring a solid foundation in core concepts.

The structured modules and practical insights from this course were instrumental in building my theoretical understanding.

Hands-On Practice with Google Cloud Skills Boost

Understanding that practical experience is crucial, I turned to Google Cloud Skills Boost, formerly known as Qwiklabs. This platform offers:

  • Curated learning paths, such as the Cloud Engineer Learning Path, guiding learners through essential GCP services and tools.
  • Hands-on labs and skill badges, allowing real-world application of concepts in a controlled environment.

Completing the Cloud Engineer Learning Path provided me with valuable hands-on experience, reinforcing the theoretical knowledge gained from the Udemy course.

By integrating these resources, I ensured a balanced preparation, combining both theoretical understanding and practical application.

Exam Practice

To ensure I was thoroughly prepared for the Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE) certification exam, I incorporated rigorous practice sessions into my study plan. Two primary resources were instrumental in this phase:

1. Udemy Practice Exams

I enrolled in the GCP ACE Google Associate Cloud Engineer Practice Test Exam. This course provided:

  • Premium quality questions: The practice tests mirrored the structure and complexity of the actual exam, offering a realistic simulation.
  • Detailed solution explanations: Each question was accompanied by comprehensive explanations, enhancing my understanding of the underlying concepts.
  • Reference links: The course included links to official documentation and other reliable sources, allowing for deeper dives into specific topics.
  • Exam strategies: Emphasis on time management and handling exam pressure, which proved invaluable during the actual test.
2. Aldovelio Castremonte's 1000 Practice Questions

Another significant resource was Aldovelio Castremonte's 1000 Practice Questions to Master the GCP Google Cloud Certified Associate Cloud Engineer Exam. This collection offered:

  • Comprehensive coverage: The questions spanned all exam domains, ensuring a well-rounded preparation.
  • In-depth explanations: Detailed rationales for each answer helped solidify my understanding and address knowledge gaps.
  • Real-life scenarios: The practice questions mirrored actual experiences and situations that a GCP Cloud Engineer may encounter in their day-to-day tasks.

By integrating these practice resources into my study routine, I was able to assess my readiness, identify areas needing improvement, and build the confidence necessary to succeed in the exam.

Exam Experience

Walking into the Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE) certification exam, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. The exam consisted of 50 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions, to be completed within 2 hours. The questions spanned various topics, including setting up cloud environments, planning and configuring solutions, deploying and managing cloud resources, and ensuring security and compliance.

I found the exam to be challenging yet fair. The questions were scenario-based, testing not just theoretical knowledge but also practical application. Thanks to my preparation, especially the hands-on labs and practice exams, I was able to navigate through the questions confidently.
